Resource description: Oceans is a short picture book that informs children about creatures living in the ocean. It is an interactive book which contains pop-up pictures. There are bright colours and the information is well organised so that students are able to gain knowledge efficiently. The book covers a wide range of creatures that are engaging for the students. Research suggests that students are engaged in learning when they are able to relate the learning content with their own lives. The book also links in with the focus KLA outcome Science and Technology of living things. This connection is important as students' information reports will be based on living animals.
This book is used in lesson 7 to show students how the author uses images in written text. Students are to look through the books and answer questions that will guide them through a visual analysis of the images. The use of this book allows students to see different sizes, shots and angles of images and what these techniques mean for the viewer. Also, this book is used to show how visuals play an important role in supporting the text when portraying meaning. Visual literacy usually consists of three specific visual concepts, representational, interactive and compositional aspects. (Callow, 2006, p. 11) This lesson focuses on the interactive aspect of visual analysis that the students will partake in. "Oceans" allows students to form understanding and meaning on how they respond to the visuals and how this affects their reading.
